Bling- The Quirky Kind!

30 Jun

Technically, these items aren’t kept in your wardrobe, but in jewellery boxes. Or like me, if you don’t have a jewellery box, in random boxes and tins!

No outfit is complete without accessories and the great thing about it is that there is so much choice and an item of jewellery that complements any look.

So here’s a little peek at some of the jewellery that I’m currently in possession of.

Personally, the kinds of rings and necklaces I like to buy are mostly on the colourful and kooky side. Unusual jewellery just appeals to me!

Everyone has different tastes and I prefer my rings to be a bit more funky and odd. Think bright, chunky and more often than not plastic rings! It’s not jewellery in the classic simple metal band case, but I love these rings because I think they stand out more.

Here’s some of the rings that I own:

Excuse the chipped nail varnish!

Excuse the horribly chipped nail varnish!

Accessorize is one of my favourite places to buy rings from. Here’s a selection of what they have to offer. I’ve had my eye on the owl ring for a while!

With necklaces, I like mine on a long chain and with a pendant that will stand out. Like this one:

The necklace in the middle is a customized necklace from Punky Pins, which sells handmade quirky accessories, from rings to brooches. The online site has free postage and package and certain places do stock Punky Pins. You can contact them to find out your nearest stockists.

As well as a range of personalised necklaces, they also sell punky pendants like this.

Bright and cute- my kind of necklace!

I really love the necklaces from Urban Outfitters too. Though sometimes they’re a bit pricier, they do have some great quirky pieces.

Wardrobe Wishlist: Cover up in the Sunshiiiiiiiine (and Rain!)

30 Jun

Imagine the scene: you’re strolling down the street with your sunnies and your beautiful little Summer dress on, basking in the sunshine when all of a sudden….it starts to rain. Aaahh the great British weather. So unpredictable.

So when I clocked my eyes on this little beauty on the Miss Selfridge website, I found the answer to my Summer weather problems.

Khaki Utility Jacket @ Miss Selfridge £45.00

Khaki Utility Jacket @ Miss Selfridge £45.00

This lightweight Khaki jacket is a great cover up for any look. Team up with either a Summer dress, vest top and denim shorts or a t-shirt and skinny jeans for a casual look.

I’m already fantasising having this item in my wardrobe…perfect for when I go to see Oasis at Wembley (Liam Gallagher-esque cool?).

So bring on the sunshiiiiiiine and the rain!

Sorted.

Wardrobe Raid: Nicola Roberts

29 Jun

Nicola Roberts

Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts ticked all the right fashion boxes this weekend with her Glastonbury festival look. Opting for festival glamour the singer looked stunning in a cute Sonia Rykiel dress and her Hunter wellies.

We loved Nicola’s outfit so much that we decided to ‘raid her wardrobe’ to find a similar-and slightly cheaper alternative.

A fashion tribute to the King of Pop

29 Jun

Ok. So whether you’re a fan of the late MJ or not, it’s fair to say that he has created some of the most memorable music that there is.

But not only that, Michael Jackson was also a huge fashion icon, whether you like to admit it or not. Along with the likes of Madonna, Jacko reinvented himself with each of his new albums and even now there are trends which are reminiscent of his early days in pop.

And no, I’m not talking about the occasional white sock or leather glove, (although Beyonce’s Sasha Fierce is a modern twist on the signature Jacko look).

I’m talking about his 80′s leather jackets and motif tees, which have come all the way back around and are in all the shops right now.

And then there were his jackets. Not only were there the infamous looks from the Thriller, Bad and Beat It videos…..

But when he wasn’t moonwalking, looking after his Bubbles or setting his hair on fire, Jacko also found time to wear some rather stylish jackets in his private life.

There is also the come back of the infamous trilby. Not only has it made a come back in black, but also in straw and canvas, both of which have been seen at Glastonbury.

And they also make a good cover up for a bad hair day, festival or not.

Another look that Jackson wore constantly throughout his reign as King of Pop, was sequins.

Normally adorned by children or dancers, sequins made an appearance in our shops last year and are still shining brightly,  and now you can find the tiny shiny’s on jackets, leggings and even shoes.

But the most wanted Jackson inspired item among the fashion elite recently, has been the Balmain Crystal-embellished canvas  jacket. Selling on Net-a-Porter right now, for a whopping £6,650 and seen on celebs such as Beyonce and Rhianna.

So as you can see Michael did much more than win Grammy’s and invent the Moonwalk. He also inspired many fashion trends.

So as well as dusting off your old Off The Wall album, why not dig out your dad’s old trilby, or borrow your sisters sequined hotpants. After all he was the King of Pop.

On Stage At Glastonbury- Final Day

29 Jun

Some great acts have taken to the stages on the final day of Glastonbury and there were two acts who played back to back on the Other Stage on Sunday.

First of these were American trio Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, fronted by the charismatic Karen O.

Karen O is known for her on stage antics as well as her sense of style and for their performance at Glastonbury she chose to stand out with a very colourful outfit, with the main piece being a bright multi-coloured headdress.

Even without the eye-catching outfit , Karen O managed to grab attention with her high energy performance, with tracks from their latest album “It’s Blitz!” met with great enthusiasm.

After the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s performance came 2007 Mercury Prize nominees Bat For Lashes.

Singer Natasha Khan often wears colourful and imaginative outfits on stage, showing a real flair for dressing up and her own sense of style. Like Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, she has also had outfits designed for her by Topshop in the past.

Natasha Khan

Khan’s outfits often blend different styles and on stage she is always visually compelling, as demonstrated here, as well as producing brilliant music.

So these are the last of our pick of the best outfits from Glastonbury.

Glastonbury Style – Day 4

28 Jun

Day four of Glastonbury Festival presented us not only with some brilliant live acts but of course some more weird and wonderful outfits to take a look at.

One name which was on a lot of people’s lips was Florence and the Machine, who was the recipient of  stage costumes designed exclusively for her by Topshop. Lucky lady! The up-and-coming star wowed the crowds from The John Peel Stage with her black and gold leotard complete with tassels and corsages, complemented with her wild red hair and seriously glittery make-up.

Meanwhile Peaches Geldof was spotted backstage in this bizarre combination of a black lacy cropped top, black high waisted shorts, tights and a red beret in the 25 degrees heat!

Girls Aloud‘s Nicola Roberts and her boyfriend Charlie Fennell showed up in his ‘n’ hers matching Hunter wellies, which looked surprisingly pristine considering the amount of mud on site. Teamed with an eye-catching red and white summer dress, perfectly manicured nails and Chanel bag, Nicola showed us exactly why she’s fast becoming the best dressed member of Girls Aloud.

Emma Watson- From Hogwarts to Fashion Icon?

27 Jun

This month Harry Potter star Emma Watson was unveiled as the new “face” of British fashion house Burberry.

Burberry Testino 1

The 19 year-old actress followed in the footsteps of supermodels Kate Moss, Stella Tennant and Agyness Dean who have all featured in Burberry fashion campaigns.

Burberry’s creative director Christopher Bailey, said: “Having known and admired the lovely Emma Watson for quite some time, she was the obvious choice for this campaign who like the images she fronts, has a classic beauty a great character and a modern edge.”

Photographed by renowned fashion photographer Mario Testino, Burberry is the first major advertising campaign for Emma Watson.

The Harry Potter star is fast becoming a British style icon. The young actress has been spotted on the front row of catwalk shows like Chanel (her favourite brand) and has graced the covers of magazines such as Tatler and now the August issue of Teen Vogue.

In an interview with Teen Vogue she says of her style: “It’s very hard to describe your own style, and I’m young, so I’m still experimenting. But I think it’s quite British and very much about individuality.”

Here at Wardrobe we love Emma’s mature and elegant style.

Work The Saturdays Style

The Saturdays show off some of their designs

The Saturdays show off some of their designs

It’s been quite a year for The Saturdays. Not content with four top ten singles and touring with the likes of Girls Aloud and Take That, they’ve now put their efforts into fashion design. The girls have just unveiled their first collection for Rare by The Saturdays, which features 2 designs from each of the girls.

My favourite is the metallic playsuit by Frankie which she describes as “sexy without trying too hard”.

The full ‘Rare by The Saturdays’ collection is available now at Rare and Asos. Prices range from £35 – £69.

Here are the girls modelling some of their creations…

On Stage Style From Glastonbury

27 Jun

Yesterdays Glastonbury line-up brought us many musical greats. But as well as the brilliant music, it brought us some acts well known for their fashion sense, on and off the stage.

Among those playing on the John Peel Stage on Friday were VV Brown and Little Boots. VV Brown wore a colourful mini dress with harlequin print on the sleeves whilst Little Boots opted for a purple sequinned dress.

Later on in the night, The Ting Tings, who have enjoyed success with their album “We Started Nothing”, played on the Other Stage.

The two main acts from Friday who caught most peoples eye were Lily Allen and Lady Gaga.

Lily Allen has come a long way from the prom dress and trainers look she used to rock when she released her first album. She’s now evolved into a major fashionista with a great personal sense of style.

Lily wore a jumpsuit with a revealing neckline and purple wig and finished the look off with glittery purple eye make-up. Sounds potentially horrendous but actually completely worked while she was performing.

Lily Allen

Lily couldn’t escape a “wardrobe malfunction” though, as the tit tape she was using fell off. But mishap aside, the jumpsuit held up.

Lily also wore a white glove, in tribute to Michael Jackson, who sadly passed away the day before.

If you wanted to get a slightly similar look, there is a black jumpsuit available on asos.com, which has a plunging neckline.

The other artist performing on the main stage Friday was Lady Gaga, who always demands attention with her outfits!

She took to the stage in a futuristic and very short silver dress.

Gaga’s notorious for her figure hugging and bum skimming outfits, and a dress like this is something that only she could pull off. This is after all, an outfit worn on stage and will obviously be more theatrical.

Keep checking Wardrobe Mag for more Glastonbury fashion highlights from the likes of Natasha Khan, Karen O and Florence of Florence and the Machine fame.

Hot new trend – Shoulder Pads?!

24 Jun
Balmain

Balmain

We thought they had remained safely back in the eighties along with crimped hair, stonewashed jeans and legwarmers, but yes shoulder pads are back with a modern twist (and legwarmers will be everywhere come autumn).

Now the recession has struck, powerdressing is back but thankfully it’s much easier to wear second time around. So how to wear this trend without looking like a throw back from Dynasty? Think smaller pads that are more sculpted and modern than their 80s counterparts.

Topshop has a good range of tops with shoulder pads already sewn in, or you can buy your own Flip Flap shoulder pads from Precious Collections for £9. This is a better and more affordable way to try them out if you’re not 100% convinced that this is the look for you.

The bonus? Extra wide shoulders give the impression of a tiny waist and balance out pear shapes.

The downside? Shoulder pads provoke strong reactions, you either love em or you hate em!

Note to self: Do not over do it like Estelle!

Would you ever wear shoulder pads?
