Go Bright or Go Home

29 Mar

Recently I was invited to the Westfield Merry Hill ‘We Are Fashion’ SS14 preview.

With the sun making an appearance lately, it has definitely got me excited for spring/summer fashion. I am totally ready to ditch my knits!

The preview was a great way of finding out this season’s new trends. I also LOVED the accessories presentation with the lovely Westfield Merry Hill bloggers Daisy & Khyati. I actually went and bought a contour kit after this!

So what should we be looking out for when shopping?

White is the new black this season. I really, really want to try this trend but I am such a mucky pup :(

Whilst I contemplate going all white on the night, I explored the next major trend of the season: brights. Yep, it’s go bright or go home this season. Even I- the girl who always goes back to black couldn’t wait to inject a burst of colour to my wardrobe.

River Island

I went along to the fashion takeover weekend a few weeks ago which was a great way of getting some inspiration on the current trends and where to find them.

You can’t escape bright colours in stores at the moment. From River Island to Warehouse, the shops are scattered with bright yellows, reds, oranges, blues and greens.

The Fashion Takeover Weekend

The key is finding the right colour to suit your skin-tone. Pale colours don’t really do anything for me but I’m quite lucky that a lot of bright colours do suit me. This might surprise a lot of people, but I love the colour bright pink. You will often see it on my lips or nails but rarely in my wardrobe- well it is in my Indian wardrobe! Another colour I am loving this season is Orange.

You know how I said I wanted to try the new ‘white’ trend this season? Well luckily, monochrome is still in and mixing brights with monochrome is a great way of tying in the two trends.

Primark

And as Daisy & Khyati said in their presentation, for those not feeling brave you can inject trends using accessories. I really wanted something yellow but it’s a colour i’m unsure about. So instead I have bought a yellow nail varnish- will see how I get on with that!

I’m really looking forward to going shopping and picking up some colourful pieces over the next few weeks, just in time for my holiday.

The future is bright and my so will my Wardrobe in a few weeks!

What’s your favourite SS14 trend?

New Primark in New Square, West Bromwich

10 Oct

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to the opening of the new Primark store in New Square- a new shopping and leisure destination in West Bromwich.

Us Wardrobe ladies love Primark as you will have guessed from the blog, and I was extra excited as West Brom is very near to where I live- bonus!

Primark- New Square, West Bromwich

It was an early start but I met up with my fellow bloggers (and lovely ladies) Emily Jayne and Emma. There was already a queue forming for the opening but we managed to get in to have a sneaky look.

The store is all on one floor, with all four departments; womenswear, menswear, childrenswear and homeware.

Straightaway I was drawn to all the lovely tartan on display- a major trend this season as mentioned before on the blog. Another hot trend on display was leopard print. Love seeing it in the shops again, it never fails to drive me wild! The lovely PR lady for Primark showed us around and we all mentally made notes on what we were going to be adding to our wardrobes. Meanwhile, the queue outside was really forming and when those doors opened, boy did it get busy!

AW13 Primark Flats

AW13 Primark Flats

I know A/W is my favourite season but I honestly think the trends this year are by far my favourite. From ‘Highland Grunge’ to ‘Graceful’, Primark is one of the stores which have really upped their game. I could have bought the whole shop!

Primark were kind enough to give me a gift card to spend in store so I did manage to grab some of the items I was lusting after. My favourite purchase has to be this ‘ethnic’ printed dress which was £13.00. I thought it would be perfect for my holiday to Rome (which is why this post is late lol) and it was!

All in all I had a fab time and was really impressed with New Square as a whole. My parents also visited the store later that day and loved it too- so we were all chuffed with our bargains that day!

If you want to update your winter wardrobe this season then make Primark your first stop- you won’t be disappointed.

New Season Style at Westfield Merry Hill

7 Sep

At the beginning of the year, I made a few fashion resolutions on the blog including to wear more bright colours. Apart from a gorgeous red Warehouse dress I bought…I pretty much failed in that task.

Who am I kidding? I like dark colours. I’m drawn to blacks, blues, dark reds, greys etc

Which is why I will always prefer Autumn/Winter. I also struggle to dress well in the summer. I’m all about cosy layers!

The sun may still be shining outside but I have already started my AW13 shop, I just couldn’t resist. We’ll be talking about the new season trends over the next few weeks which I’m really excited about. Apologies for the Instagram faceless selfies, but that’s how I roll these days!

This Tuesday I was invited to the Westfield Merry Hill bloggers event. I had great fun at the SS13 event so didn’t want to miss this one. I went with the lovely Sian from Tea an Toast blog- she’s a sweetie, do check out her blog!

It’s always nice to catch up with fellow local bloggers and meeting new faces including Daisy & Khyati. Before the catwalk show, we chatted to some of the beauty stalls that were there including Smashbox, Bumble & Bumble, Max Factor & No7. I was given some samples to try out so will see how they fare.

It was then onto the catwalk show. Now this was my kind of catwalk show- items that are accessible and affordable. The looks were created from high street stores such as Internacionale, Warehouse, Oasis, New Look and Vero Moda.

Trends to invest in are faux leather, texture such as fur & quilt, metallic prints, gold bling (love it), animal print and cobalt blue.

Below are a few of my favourite looks from the evening:

I literally can’t wait to go shopping! Quite Bad I know, as I am trying to watch the pennies but how can I resist all these gorgeous trends on the high street right now?

I’ll be visiting Westfield Merry Hill next weekend for their Fashion Takeover. I went last year and managed to get some ace stuff discounted. From Friday 13th to Sunday 15th you can grab a free voucher booklet from the concierge desk which includes discounts such as 25% off Warehouse. If you need some shopping inspiration head to Fountain Square where you’ll be able to see the latest trends.

I’m not sure what I’ll go for as like I said I’ve already started buying my AW13 bits! I’m thinking a new handbag or some fit boots…

Have you started your AW13 shopping? What do you think of the outfits above?

Fall Forwards: intro to AW11 trends

12 Jul

Most of us haven’t had our summer holidays yet but the autumn/ winter collections are slowly taking over the high street. The new season’s offerings look particularly exciting with a break from the boring browns, beiges and khakis that usually signal the arrival of autumn.

Over my next few posts allow me to provide you with a comprehensive overview of what you’ll be wearing this Autumn/Winter, with high-end inspiration and high-street picks!

It’s a Man’s World

If you’re sick of summer’s delicate pleats, floaty maxis and billowing palazzos prepare to take on an alter ego with a pretty androgynous look. As seen at Celine and Paul Smith amongst others, a crisp shirt, sharp trousers and some brogues are your new season mannish must-haves. Throw on a tailored blazer and slick on some lippie to add a girly touch.

Olivia Palermo worked this look to perfection when she stepped out in this chic black tux with cigarette pants and a tie. The queen of accessories added leopard print heels and a glam clutch to prevent it from looking too boyish.

I love both Warehouse and Topshop’s take on the androgynous trend – longline blazers with splashes of leopard print seem to be the way to go!

Topshop and Warehouse have both offered their own interpretations of the androgynous trend

Spot On!

The perennial polka dot has made a comeback in all manner of guises from laser cut circles at Stella McCartney to Dalmation prints at Topshop Unique. Whether you go for Marc Jacobs’ printed fur or David Koma’s chic leather circles, prepare to go dotty this autumn!

High end vs High Street...Stella McCartney and Topshop's AW spotty styles

Cheryl Cole stepped out in a Stella McCartney AW11 dress as she celebrated her 28th birthday recently.

This Primark faux fur dalmation print coat may be a little reminiscent of Cruella Deville but as a fast fashion replica of Topshop Unique’s dalmation prints it’s sure to be a sell out. Get in there quick!

Monochrome Magic

Good news for the colour shy – the simple monochrome palette of black and white made a comeback in collections from Louis Vuitton and Julien McDonald…even Giles made a departure from his more recent kitsch and playful prints for a more simple statement in monochrome. Give your monochrome look an edge for AW with patent, leather and lace detailing.

Alexa Chung is a great ambassador for this look, proving a black and white colour palette doesn’t have to be boring. Here she works two of AW’s key looks…monochrome and boyish.

Alexa Chung in a monochrome short suit

These are just three of AW’s trends; still to come – Colour, 60′s, 70′s and more…there’s something for everyone this autumn! Which is your favourite?

Forever 21 opens in Birmingham

10 Nov

A new store is opening in Birmingham this week, and we’re looking forward to its arrival in the UK! Forever 21 is one of the most popular fashion stores over in the US, and they’ll be launching their first UK shop in the Bullring on Friday, November 12.

Staff have been working on the store, which is located on the Upper East Mall, for a good few weeks now and it’s not surprising as it’s set to be the biggest shop in the Bullring aside from the department stores!

Many of you may be aware of the brand from fashion magazines or blogs – they held their official preview event in London last week – but for those of you who don’t know what to expect think Topshop style at H&M or even Primark prices…result!

Model Amber Le Bon is the new face of the store, and will be helping to open the Birmingham branch with Mr Chang, CEO of Forever 21. To celebrate the launch Forever 21 is giving away tote bags full of goodies for the first 900 customers. They will also be offering customisation stands for customers to get creative with their new purchases.

Will you be making a visit to the new Forever 21 store?

WIOW: I Heart A/W10 Military….

5 Aug

We Wardrobe ladies might be busy working hard but we certainly don’t give up spending our cash too!

You’ve heard from the other girls spending sprees now here’s mine…

Certain trends come and go but there are those that ALWAYS come back and luckily for me two of my fave trends always make an appearance each year: Nautical and Military.

We’ve had our nautical summer fun and now it’s time to toughen up and get ready with the recurrence of the military trend. Even though it is still technically summer (come back sunshine!), high street shops have been filling their rails and shelves with Autumn/Winter stock, teasing us with those winter wools.

Even though I’m not quite ready to desert my t-shirts for knitwear- its summertime!- I’ve “given in” and bought some pieces which should help making that tranisition from SS10 to AW10. First stop, Primark!

This seasons military trend is more about the khaki/camel/and navy colours. Anything with brass/gold buttons is a must. My first item that I picked was this black military look tunic for £10.00

Primark Military Tunic in Black £10.00

I think this shirt is smart enough to wear for work and thin enough for the warm weather. Even though i’m tempted to wear it with my lace up work boots I think tan boots would compliment the black nicely.

My second purchase (which I bought a month back actually) was this khaki crochet jumper for £9.00. I bought it as it combined two summer trends in one…khaki and crochet. For winter I will wear a thicker top underneath and of course my lace up boots, yay!

Crochet- not just for doilies!

The next item is deffo my fave purchase of the day. When I saw this jacket…I fell in love. After telling myself I didn’t NEED it, I finally caved in after trying it on and seeing the price. For £15.00 it is a bargain as there was a similar jacket in River Island which was more expensive.

Fit! Primark cropped Military Jacket £15.00

I can’t wait to wear this with my stone coloured chinos. Here’s me modelling the ‘fit’, and although you can’t see (tired eyes), I do have a face!

Awkward Posing!

With the A/W10 stuff coming in, there have been a lot of summer sales on in the high street. I don’t know about you but it depends on what kind of mood i’m in when it comes to sale shopping. If it’s too busy or if the shop/sales floor is a mess then I can’t be bothered. However, me and the Wardrobe girls were in a shopping mood when it came to the Next sale and we all managed to grab some right bargains.

It might not seem much but when I saw this t-shirt, I was so happy! I tried to order this in a few months ago but it wasn’t available to order. So it was a complete surprise to see it in the sale and in my size.

£8.00? Yes Please!

I just love the rose print and of course getting it at £8.00 is much better than paying full price for it, hehe!

Another thing I got at the Next sale were these shoes. I admit they were bought purely because of the price and the fact they look amazing. I’m a fan of tassles/fringing which is what caught my eye in the first place. From £40.00 to £15.00 I think I nabbed myself a proper bargain :) It’s time I started to walk in heels…never mind run in them!

Honey Tassled Suede Heels @ Next was £40.00

Even though I managed to get a few more items (ssh) we’ll leave it at that before I get all guilty at how much I have spent/bought!

Did you pick up anything in the Summer Sales? What do you think of the new A/W10 trends?

WIOW: summer splurge!

27 Jun

Another pay day has arrived which can only mean one thing…a shopping spree! Working in the centre of Birmingham means I sometimes struggle to resist the lure of the Bullring on my lunch breaks, and when I know I have money in my bank it becomes even harder to restrain myself! So a bit of lunchtime shopping and a lot of post-work browsing has left me with lots of lovely new things to cram into my already-too-full wardrobes (yes I have two…) Here’s a little peek at my latest purchases.

A trip to Topshop was much called for as I’ve had £20 of vouchers burning a hole in my purse since my birthday last month. I immediately loved this leopard print skirt (£32) with its big pockets and zip detail on the waist. Cheryl Cole/ Tweedy worked the leopard look for the X Factor auditions earlier this month, so if it’s good enough for her…

Topshop Leopard Print Skirt, £32

My next purchase was these harem trousers from New Look (£22). I bought these in beige a couple of months ago and since then have been on the lookout for them in black. They always seem to be out of stock in my size, but today I spotted them in grey which will make a good addition to my working wardrobe.

New Look, £22

I don’t know about anyone else, but I find dressing for work in the summer is more difficult than usual. It brings problems like remaining smart but still being comfortable (and stylish) in the hot weather, plus I’m constantly asking myself how much flesh is too much? A solution has been found in my next two buys; a polka dot shift dress from Primark (£13) and white shirt from New Look (£18). Both are lightweight materials which will keep me cool, while their classic tailored shapes are smart enough for the office.

Primark polka dot dress, £13

New Look belted ruffle shirt £18

Finally, I have a confession…after months of umm-ing and ahh-ing over the style credentials of the clog I’ve finally bought a pair! My tan slingback clogs were from Dorothy Perkins (£40) and I love them. They have a massive heel but the platform helps to make them surprisingly comfortable, so I can’t wait to wear them!

What have you been spending your money on this month?

Supermarket Sweep

1 Nov

My shopping list: Bread ✓ Milk ✓ Crisps ✓ Cheese ✓ Ribena ✓ New shoes ✓ Clothing at tesco

New shoes on my shopping list i hear you ask? If you weren’t already aware then thanks to supermarkets like Asda and Tesco we can incorporate shopping for clothes alongside our weekly shop. Though if you were like me then the idea of getting your clothes at the local supermarket was a bit off-putting. But it’s fair to say now that the supermarkets have really stepped up their game in the fashion stakes.

We’ve already mentioned on Wardrobe how impressed we are at Asda’s clothing brand George, a favourite with shoppers. With Christmas coming up and the recession still hurting our pockets it’s no wonder that we’re all turning towards the cheaper options to get our fashion fix.

With a lot of focus on the usual ‘affordable’ shops like Primark, Matalan, Peacocks and Asda George, I thought i’d take a look at Tesco’s clothing range after hearing about it through the grapevine.

I have to say on first impressions i’m really impressed. There is certainly something for everyone. Some great fashionable pieces especially in the Liquorish and F&F brand! Here’s a few items that are definitely going on my wishlist:

Tesco Feather Print Top

Feather Print Top @ Tesco £12.00

Tesco Signature Leather ankle boot

F&F Signature Leather Ankle Boot @ Tesco £28.00

Tesco signature studded tunic

F&F Signature Studded Tunic @ Tesco £20.00

Tesco Stud detail dress

F&F Stud Detail Dress @ Tesco £10.00

F&F Checked Duffle Coat @ Tesco was £35.00 now £30.00

Some of the items above are online exclusives which you can buy here or you can pop down to your local Tesco’s. From what i’ve seen lately there is nothing off-putting about buying supermarket clothes anymore…

What are your views on supermarket clothing?

Asda’s George takes number one fashion spot

9 Oct
Ex-face of George, Mrs Coleen Rooney

Ex-face of George, Mrs Coleen Rooney

According to a report in The Times today, Asda’s George brand has become the UK’s biggest fashion retailer overtaking Marks and Spencer to the number one spot.

Figures from TNS Worldpanel Fashion showed that George recorded its highest ever total volume market share of 10.1%. High street favourite Primark came in second place with 9.9% and Marks & Spencer third at 9.8%.

The findings show that consumers are opting for cheaper fashion alternatives during these credit-crunch times.

We at Wardrobe aren’t surprised at these findings. While M&S will probably be back on top come Christmas time, there is no doubt that George’s fashionable but affordable clothes are taking consumers fancy.

From women’s fashion to men’s George really have a fashionable range suitable for all.

I’ve picked out some of George’s key women’s pieces (mainly in their fab G21 range) to show exactly why it is currently number one.

Balmainia!

8 Sep

It’s been the inspiration for much of this year’s Autumn/Winter collections, and now you can get your hands on a genuine Balmain piece with 60% off!

The Outnet have selected Balmain pieces on sale for a limited time only so if you have a spare grand or two, check out the sale here.

My favourite pieces are this Satin Lapel Tapored Jacket – reduced to £884.25 and the Studded Mini skirt which is an even less affordable £2,330.

balmain jacket

balmain skirt

Fortunately the high street is awash with Balmain rip offs for those of us who can’t afford the eyewatering prices even with 60% off! Primark has a great copy of the blazer for £18 or you could even try a bit of DIY on your boyfriend blazer from the Spring and put in your own shoulder pads from your local haberdashery.

Oasis has some great Balmain-esque pieces including this studded mini which is very similar to its high-end inspiration. At a much more purse friendly £75, this bodycon skirt will look amazing teamed with a simple vest and some caged heels.

What do you think of the Balmain collection? Will you be getting your hands on any of the genuine pieces or their high street counterparts?
